The Flower Girl
Traditions
Tradition holds that a young girl carrying flowers brings good luck to the marriage. It’s with innocence and beauty the flower girl walks down the aisle ahead of the bride carefully dropping petals from the basket she carries. She will capture the hearts of guests and set the mood for the arrival of the bride. The spreading of petals represents a beautiful path for the Bride. Today the flower girl may carry a bouquet of flowers or other token instead of dropping petals.
The Dress
When choosing a flower girl dress, consider the style, colour and formality of the occasion. She should not outshine the bride, but compliment her gown while blending with the bridesmaids outfits. The dress can be white or ivory, the same colour as the bridesmaid’s gowns, or a contrasting colour that complements the outfits of the entire party. To blend with Bridesmaids gowns a coloured sash could be used on a white or ivory dress.
As girls love dressing up, a flower girl dress in a Princess or Fairy theme has become very popular, especially for garden or beach weddings. These dresses have the added advantage of becoming the favorite play dress for years to come, and no doubt reliving their wedding role.
Whatever style you choose, try to avoid those that will make your flower girls look to sophisticated for their age, keep it age appropriate. Skirt lengths should not be too long to avoid flower girls tripping on long hemlines.
Be creative, your Flowergirl is the first thing your guests see, make it memorable.
